Franchise-agreement redaction is the removal of franchisee PII from a franchise file. The UK has no franchise disclosure statute, so there is no prescribed disclosure document and no statutory roster of other franchisees. What governs instead is ordinary contract law, Misrepresentation Act 1967 s.2(1) for pre-contract statements, and the voluntary BFA Code of Ethics. The personal data therefore sits in the agreement itself and in any guarantee.
When this applies
A franchise file names the franchisee, the unit territory, and any personal guarantor. Its restrictive covenants are read against the Vertical Agreements Block Exemption Order 2022, in force since 1 June 2022, which withholds the exemption from a long-running non-compete. Those covenants stay in the precedent; the names go.
How anonym.plus handles it
- Load the file into anonym.plus on your device.
- The tool flags franchisee and guarantor names.
- It catches the unit address and bank fields.
- Confirm the flags and keep the system terms.
- Swap or black out the IDs.
- Save the clean file on your machine.
What you need to provide
- The franchise file (PDF, DOCX, or scan).
- An operator; Replace keeps the terms readable.
- Optional rule to keep generic system standards.

| Contact | PHONE_NUMBER | franchisee tel → [PHONE] |
Compliance achieved
- Recognises that the UK has no franchise disclosure statute, so Misrepresentation Act 1967 s.2(1) and general contract law carry the pre-contract risk.
- Flags personal guarantors, who sign in their own name rather than the unit's.
- Keeps the system standards, territory rules, and any covenant judged under the Vertical Agreements Block Exemption Order 2022.
- Supports UK GDPR Recital 26 anonymisation for shareable precedents.
- Local-only work — nothing is uploaded.

Limitations & cautions
A defined territory can point to the franchisee even after names go. Broaden the unit address where the use allows. Guarantor and witness lines must go too, since they are PII in the file.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a UK pre-sale disclosure document?
No. There is no UK equivalent of a statutory pre-sale disclosure document, so nothing forces a franchisor to publish a roster of its franchisees. Members of the British Franchise Association follow its Code of Ethics voluntarily, and pre-contract statements are policed by Misrepresentation Act 1967 s.2(1).
Are personal guarantors cleared?
Yes. A guarantor signs in their own name, so their address and contacts stay personal data even where the franchisee itself is a company. They are flagged alongside the franchisee's own details.
Is the unit territory removed?
By default, yes, because a precise unit address is location data and can re-identify the operator. Keep a broad territory via an allow-list where the precedent needs one.
