Licensing Agreement Redaction with anonym.plus

Clear licensee IDs from a licence agreement while the grant terms stay.

In simple terms, PII redaction is the on-device process of finding and masking personally identifiable information in a document before it is shared.

Licensing-agreement redaction is the removal of licensee PII from a licence. CDPA 1988 s.92(1) requires an exclusive copyright licence to be in writing and signed by or on behalf of the owner, and s.90(3) says the same for an assignment. The signature block is therefore load-bearing and the executed original must stay whole. anonym.plus redacts only the copy you share.

When this applies

A licence names the licensor, the licensee, the signatories, and a royalty account. A trade mark licence is also a registrable transaction under TMA 1994 s.25, so part of the relationship may already sit on the public register at the UK IPO. The bank and contact fields are not on that register, and those go first.

How anonym.plus handles it

  1. Open the file in anonym.plus on your device.
  2. The tool flags licensor and licensee names.
  3. It catches signatories, contacts, and royalty accounts.
  4. Confirm the flags and keep the grant text.
  5. Swap or black out the IDs.
  6. Save the clean file on your machine.

Limitations & cautions

Royalty rates plus a niche field can hint at the licensee even after names go. Review such lines. Defined terms may carry a brand name, so check the grant text before you share.

Frequently asked questions

Why must the signed original survive?

CDPA 1988 s.90(3) requires an assignment of copyright to be in writing and signed by or on behalf of the assignor, and s.92(1) applies the same rule to an exclusive licence. Redacting that executed document would remove the signature the section relies on. Clean a duplicate instead.

Is a licence already public?

Sometimes, in part. TMA 1994 s.25 makes a trade mark licence a registrable transaction, and the UK IPO register is open to the public. Registering late can also cost a licensee its costs recovery in infringement proceedings, so the entry is usually made.

Can the royalty terms stay?

Yes. The grant, field of use, and royalty maths stay in full. Only personal data and account identifiers change.
