Watchlist Match Record Redaction with anonym.plus

Clear subject identifiers from a watchlist hit before you share it for review.

In simple terms, PII redaction is the on-device process of finding and masking personally identifiable information in a document before it is shared.

A watchlist match record shows where a name lined up with the UK Sanctions List. That list is made under SAMLA 2018, and OFSI publishes the consolidated list of financial sanctions targets. A confirmed match brings an asset freeze and a report to OFSI. anonym.plus removes the subject's name, identifier, and contacts from a copy on your device.

When this applies

Most hits are false positives, and how each was cleared is the audit trail. UK GDPR Art. 5(1)(d) asks a controller to keep personal data accurate. Part 8 of the Policing and Crime Act 2017 gives OFSI its monetary-penalty power. An outside auditor reviewing disposition quality needs the decision trail, not the person.

How anonym.plus handles it

  1. Open the hit in anonym.plus on your device.
  2. Local OCR reads a scanned match printout.
  3. The tool flags the name, identifier, and contacts.
  4. Keep the list source, score, and disposition.
  5. Swap each identifier for a label.
  6. Save the clean copy locally.

Limitations & cautions

OFSI expects the full match evidence to be retained. Clean only a copy for training or outside review. A rare alias plus a birth year can still point to one person, so check the residual fields.

Frequently asked questions

Should I redact the hit I keep for review?

No. Keep the full evidence. OFSI and your supervisor judge the file as it stands, so clean only a copy for review or training.

Are aliases and transliterations flagged?

Yes. The tool covers 48 languages, so an alias is flagged like any subject term.

Why does data accuracy matter for a false positive?

UK GDPR Art. 5(1)(d) requires personal data to be accurate and kept up to date. A wrongly held match is inaccurate data about a real person, so the disposition record has to be clear.
